M.S. Program Information
Admission
Requirements
M.S. admission is based on an academic record demonstrating
adequate preparation and potential for successful graduate study. This
typically includes a B.S. from an engineering curriculum accredited
by the Accrediting Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or the
equivalent from a non-U.S. institution. Submission of results from the
Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required. A grade point average (GPA)
of 3.0 is usually required. Graduates who do not have a bachelor's degree
in either Civil, Architectural or Environmental Engineering may be required
to take preparatory undergraduate courses. Complete information is given
in the Graduate Catalogue.
For general graduate
study information see the Graduate
Admissions office. Applications for admission must be submitted
through that office.
M.S. Civil Engineering Degree
Requirements
A total of 45 credit hours, based on a quarter
system, are required for the M.S. degree. The weighted GPA must be 3.0
or higher. No credit is given for courses in which a "C-" is
obtained. Transfer credit may be given for up to the equivalent of 15
quarter hours of relevant graduate courses from other institutions.
Up to 15 credits of relevant coursework may also be transferred from
another Drexel M.S. program. Up to 9 credits may be granted for Drexel
graduate courses taken as an undergraduate, provided these credits are
not used to fulfill the requirements of another degree (e.g. B.S.C.E.)

The M.S. degree
requires at least 30 credits in the area of concentration --- a combination
of core courses and approved electives. At least six credits must be
taken in analytical methods, either mathematics or statistics courses
or courses dealing primarily with mathematical or numerical methods.
Remaining coursework applied to the degree must be in areas related
to the practice of Engineering. Elective courses are selected in consultation
with the student's advisor.
Structural Engineering,
Geotechnical/Geosynthetics, Water Resources/Coastal/Hydraulics and Environmental
programs have established core courses.
Students interested in Building Systems/Architectural Engineering, or
Infrastructure/Materials concentrations may compile a broader program
that addresses their career plans, but it must be academically and professionally
coherent.
Full-time M.S. students
are required to complete a thesis, for which up to 9 credits are given.
Part-time students may write an original practice or research oriented
report, for which 3 to 6 credits are given, depending upon its depth
and scope.
