2nd Place in the Geo-Challenge Student Competition

GeoDragons

Drexel student team “Geo-Dragons” was ranked in the top five in the Geo-Challenge proposal competition and awarded a $2,000 travel grant to participate in the National Geotechnical Competition at the Geo-Congress 2008 in New Orleans, March 10-13. The team consisted of Theresa Andrejack (team leader), James Gardner, Michael Henrick, Erica Leeds, and Dr. Grace Hsuan (Advisor). The competition involved designing a reinforced soil wall that could support 50 lbs of loading using a minimum area of paper reinforcement. Eleven teams participated in the competition; only two teams successfully constructed walls that supported the 50 lb load and had minimum deflection of the wall face. The first place team, Louisiana State University used fewer square inches of paper reinforcement to win the competition over Drexel. Details of the competition will be presented in a poster for the Drexel Research Day, Tuesday, April 22nd.
