Conference in Restoration of Heritage Masonry Structures

Dr. Ahmad Hamid. Professor of Structural Engineering
at the CAEE Department of Drexel University launched The First International
Conference on Restoration of Heritage Masonry Structures in Cairo April
24 to 27, 2006. The conference was held under the auspices of the Egyptian
Supreme Council of Antiquities. The conference provided a forum for
the exchange of information about evaluation, assessment and restoration/retrofit
of historic, ancient and heritage masonry structures. Over 75 delegates
from 12 countries attended the two and half days conference. For details

A post-conference Nile cruise workshop was held April 28 to May 1st.
A group of six experts headed by Dr. Ahmad Hamid participated in this
workshop with the objective of drafting a conservation guidelines for
heritage masonry structures in Egypt. A detailed outline was presented
to the Supreme Council and a proposal will follow to seek funding from
local and international organizations to complete the guidelines and
include two detailed case studies of critical and comprehensive conservation
projects in Egypt.
